A Summary of "Offshore Atoll" by James R. Cook

As the name suggests, Sea Story is a novel written about sea life. However, it isn't about sea life per se, but the exploration of all aspects of the sea from its people, history and culture to its flora and fauna. In essence, it's a novel about exploring what is beyond the horizon of our sight. It's a story about how we get the information we need to live our lives, and the ways we can use the ocean's bounty to enrich our lives and our planet.

As the title suggests, this is an adult novel written in the very recognizable genre of 릴게임. But it's not about the military, although the plot and some of the characters do take place in a military environment. Rather, it's an adventure novel about a man whose early years are spent as a boy aboard a sailing ship off the coast of Maine. In these years he becomes obsessed with learning to survive on the open sea, much to the dismay of his parents and the rest of his crew.

Peter J. Cook has combined a love of the ocean and the narrative style of a maritime epic in a novel which will captivate all ages and interests. The sea story covers many decades in which the main character, a young man called Tommy, spends his days on a pirate ship seeking not only to find true love but also to become a master sailor. While this may seem like a simple task in the beginning, Tommy soon discovers that being a master sailor requires much more than luck and skill. He must develop his mind, body and spirit, all of which are affected by the sea's constant shifts and tides.

There are many possible futures based on how Tommy makes his way on the sea story. Some are good, some are bad. He could marry an mermaid, get married to an angel or fall in love with an human girl called Submission. In the end, Tommy realizes that in order to survive on the sea he must learn to love all people regardless of race, religion or sex. This ultimately proves to be the most important lesson of the sea story, which is that we must learn to embrace each and everyone of whom we come into contact whether they are human, sea or otherwise.

Cook's novel is rich with symbolism. Not only is it infused with the history and legend of the sea, it is also peppered with symbols from various religions. For example, Tommy's first mate, an Irish woman called Fergie, is believed to represent Ireland and Tommy is said to have a link to her because of his blindness. In another scene, Submission, a mysterious young girl who is the daughter of a wealthy man is waiting beside Tommy on the ship. She tugs at his arm and he tells her that she is his soul mate.

Cook does a wonderful job of weaving a tale filled with interesting characters and a human drama that will stay with you long after you have read the last line of the book. The sea has always been seen as the central element of life on earth. But it is up to us humans to interpret the symbolic meaning of this ocean story in our own lives. We need only to look around us to see how the sea has had an impact not only on our lives but on those of others. We need only to listen to the stories of the past to see how the sea has affected our ancestors. The sea story is part of our heritage and is woven into our culture.
